    Default 3.3.5a Servers (Rackmount systems)

I currently have a couple extra 1U rackmount IBMs laying around...

Also an old Tyan S2462 with 2x1800+ AMD MPs.

What I'm wondering...Is how will these systems stack up?

    1. IBM Opteron (1 of 2 CPUs) @ 2.0GHz (Have 2nd Heatsink, No CPU)
    3GB DDR 333 ECC RAM (2x1GB and 2x512MB)
40GB Seagate 7200.7 RPM Hard Drive
    2xGigabit Ethernet

    2. IBM Xeon (1 of 2 CPUs) @ 3.2GHz (Have 2nd CPU, no Heatsink)
    3GB DDR 333 ECC RAM (2x1GB and 2x512MB)
2x36.4GB SCSI 10K RPM Hard Drives (I have two 15K RPM as well)
    2xGigabit Ethernet

    3. Tyan Dual AMD 1800+
4GB DDR 400 ECC RAM (Shows 3846MB) 2x2GB DDR ECC
80GB Seagate 7200.10 RPM Hard Drive
    2xGigabit Ethernet

I've currently got a cable ISP, with 15Mbs Down and 2Mbs Up. I'm about to jump to 25Mbs Down and 4Mbs Up, it's only $10 more a month.

Anyway, what kind of playerbase could I have on these systems?

    Where would the bottleneck be?

How many toons could the servers handle, Power-wise...

Also, how many could be lag-free on 4Mbs?

Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

so the first system informations about a server on a PC:

you need min. 2 processors ( 1 for the pc system like windows and the other for the server)

min 3GB ram ( 1 for system 2 for the server)
1 player needs roundabout 15 kb/s upload and 60 kb/s download speed for a ping of 100 or less
1 player needs 4 mb ram so if you have a root with 8GB ram and 4 processors the server has more than enough power for 1000+ players.

that 3 systems you have shown us are not sooooo good for server like wow... for a basic server like a 10 - 80 playerserver maybe enough but than you need more power...

    Thanks for the info.

I've got another CPU for the Opteron on it's way...It was only $8.

The Heatsink for the Xeon is like $25 and the only people selling it are in the UK.

So I'll probably hold off on the Xeon.

I'm thinking if I run a logon server from the AMD 1800+ along with Apache for the site...

Then I can just put the Worldserver on the Opteron.

Only thing is, I tried this once and couldn't get the two to match up at all.

I just bumped the Opteron to 4GB of RAM and when the 2nd CPU comes in, it should work pretty well, at least I'm hoping.

I may snatch the 2x2GB from the Tyan 2x1800+ and put like 6GB in the Opteron, she's got 6 slots for ECC RAM.

Got plenty of 512MB sticks, the Tyan would max out at 2GB though.

Definately going for the upgraded cable speed after hearing the bandwidth requirements per person.

Now I just have to get a Window A/C Unit before I can turn all these mini furnaces on...

I wasn't planning on making huge World-wide servers out of these old Rackmounts...My family, some friends, and maybe a few more is probably all I'd ever get on my server.

Just trying to get an idea of how many people could be online, and actually play on them without it being a lagfest.

My apologies, didn't mean to post in the wrong section.

Just an update, the Tyan server with Dual 1800+ Althons, seemed to handle three of us just fine. Heh.

Probably with my connection, wouldn't be able to get more than about 50 people playing without lag.

But I'm seriously thinking the Tyan AMD could nearly handle that, even with it's old CPUs.

The Xeon or Opteron with a second CPU installed would be much nicer.

Once I get all the little stuff figured out and polished, I'll post some links and people can try it out if they feel like it.

Thanks for the insight, and I think I can figure it out from here.

    Edit:
I am selling that Xeon, and the second CPU sucks, it's less than $15 bucks on Ebay to upgrade to 250 2.4GHz instead.

Oh, and I slapped 6GB of RAM in there...

I'm just messing around now, running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit on it until the new 250's come in.

I'll probably max it out at 8GB, the best I can do without buying more RAM.
